Shelagh McNicholas. Alice in Wonderland.

Shelagh McNicholas' illustrations recreate a Wonderland of delicate atmospheres. The colours, soft and bright at the same time, thanks to the watercolour technique, live with a cool pencil drawing which emerges from the painting and often shows the construction marks of figures and scenes. In this way the illustrator obtains pictures with a strong sense of dynamism combined with a light and graceful atmosphere. Even the characters are loving and  happy and it seems that they accompany the reader to a country adventure that takes place near a wood in the English countryside.

Interview with Shelagh McNicholas

How has been you approach to illustrate one of the most famous classic children's book?
I have been illustrating books for children for 25 years and I have been fortunate to have worked with a variety of publishers here in the UK, USA and Australia. I had worked with Parragon Publishers (the publishers of the book) and they approached me asking if I would be interested in illustrating Alice in Wonderland. Of course I was delighted and accepted immediately! The book was packaged with the most delightful charm necklace...a little silver rabbit on a chain.

What is your relation with this book and with classic children's literature?
When I was a little girl my favourite story books were the tales of Mrs Pepperpot by Alf Proysen and The Borrowers by Mary Norton. I would pour over these books for hours and search the library shelves looking for any titles I may had missed.

I adored Mrs Pepperpot and took Mrs Clock, the mother of The Borrowers straight to my heart, despite her faults which I think make her all the more lovable. In my opinion, these books are masterpieces for the charm and ingenuity of it's miniature world. Alice in Wonderland similarly has an adventure like Mrs Pepperpot, when she shrinks and falls down the rabbit hole and finds herself in a completely new world and pending adventure. Fascinated by what she may encounter and the perils that unknowingly lay before her. I love the play on scale as Alice grows again to her normal size enveloping the room in which she has found herself...reminiscent again of Mrs Pepperpot. I also adore the imaginary characters she encounters on her travels and the literary nonsense that makes Alice in Wonderland such a classic, entertaining children through the years and continuing to do so!

What was your source of inspiration for your illustrations?
I have always been a bit of a draughtswoman. I love to draw from life, always having a sketch book to had to capture the moment. I especially like to draw figures, children at play, running, dancing, never being still. I have compiled a 'library' of sketch books and sketches over the years and I guess in answer to your question that it is children of all ages that inspire me. And having a young daughter always helps! As for the other characters in the book, I'm sure we all know a Queen of Hearts, a Mad Hatter oh and of course a delightful White Rabbit among our family and friends...but I couldn't possibly disclose who I based which character on...could I???

Could you describe your technique?
I am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to creating artwork. My technique is very simple. I draw with a soft pencil, usually a 3B pencil and I use watercolours and that's it. I am passionate about drawing and I teach art part time at a local primary school. I refuse to believe it when the children say to me that they can't draw...it's impossible! My response to them is that everyone can draw...they just need to be shown how and a lot about drawing is in looking!

What is your favorite illustration among those you have done for this book? Why?
Gosh...that's a tough one! I do like the Mad Hatter's tea party illustration, if I had the opportunity I would love to do a huge table, filled with lots of 'afternoon tea' goodies and use my collection of vintage china for props, and have a whole host of characters around the table.

I'm also very fond of the caucus race, it's comical! Interestingly, I had an email enquiry some years back now, from a lady in Hollywood, California asking if she could purchase an illustration/character development study of Alice. I had been working on creating her character and I'm not exactly sure how the image managed to find it's way on to the internet but I'm so glad it did. The lady, Mary Sheldon, daughter of the late, great author and play write, Sidney Sheldon and I have become great friends. She visits the UK every year and I'm hoping to pay here a visit in LA soon.
